Coaches

This is for the coaching team at NWPC - 2024-25

Coaches need to register as club members under coaching - we will reimburse you.  Once registered you have access to the WP Aus training site here

The club is also working with WP Vic on training

Team Notes:  U16B is a solid team that have played together over a number of seasons

U14B is primarily up from U12 and will probably need strong guidance and upskilling on game play.  We may have one stong good player.

Training
• Club apparel - Coach T-shirts @ training and games
• WhatsApp – for each team and coaches
• Unavailable – notify as early as possible, so we can organise cover
• Manager - per team use them to co-ordinate players, balls, caps and parents
• Parents – keep them engaged and aware of any concerns or areas for improvement
• Respect – expected from players and parents. If you’re having any issues raise early with team manager, coaching coordinator or any of the NWPC committee.

Training – 15 mins before

  • Preparation – be organised on what you’re looking to achieve and let the team know at the start of training
  • Start time - arrive 15mins early to be ready to enter the pool at 8pm
  • Structure – 1hr typically broken up:
    • 20mins – Warmup / Swimming
    • 20mins – Conditioning/Skills à game-based drills
    • 20mins – Shooting drills/game simulation
  • Inclusive - playing environment, make time for all players at training and in games
  • Game based – where possible make the drills game simulations or play based
  • Pool logistics
    • Pool setup/pack down ALL players are responsible
    • Time/space to be divided up equally between teams
    • Coaches (and players) to be considerate of space ie everyone deserves time on goal or in the deep end
    • Train in teams. Where useful negotiate prior to training with other coach for game simulation or competitive drills
    • Teams trained to work together and not rely on individual brilliance

Play Style

We want a common style that the players can work with and carry on as they age up.  The same approach for terminology

Offense Defense
1. Counterattack
a. Short left + long left
b. Safety short right
2. Kick out - 4-2 formation
a. Fast ball movement
b. Move the defence and keeper
3. Setup - 3-3 formation (Mushroom)
a. Fast ball movement
b. Drivers from 2, 3 & 4
c. CF kickouts & passes
1. Press
a. Goal side
b. Accountable – maintain contact
c. No foul à run the clock down
2. Drop
a. Foul, drop back
b. Hand up
c. Defend passing lanes

Postions

Players need to be aware of how the positions are required to play (1,2,3,4,5,6).  They should learn to be flexible to be able to switch

Make them aware of 30 seconds shot clock.  10scs to get the ball up the pool, 15 to get a shot off or dump the ball.  Repeat.

Ensure they remember that most attacks dont score and you get the ball back every 30 seconds!!

If a shot is about to go then everyone must transition before the shot to get back into defence.  Not watch the shot and then think about it.

Be aware of their teammates passing ability and adjust accordingly - including the goalie passing out.   No point being 15m away if they can only pass 10.
